Novosco Expands Its Enterprise Cloud Platform

Novosco announces a major expansion of its cloud computing platform.

June 7th 2012 – Novosco today formally launched its newly revamped range of enterprise-class cloud computing services covering the full range of Software-as-a-Service (applications on demand), Infrastructure-as-a-Service (server compute and storage on demand), plus backup, security and resilient connectivity to the Internet.

Novosco’s Enterprise Cloud Services help organisations to achieve cost savings and leverage the efficiency of a fully managed cloud environment with enterprise class availability, reliability and security.  Built on best-in-class technologies from VMware, Cisco and EMC, Novosco’s Enterprise Cloud Services deliver managed compute, network, storage and security services that support customer production environments.  Novosco is also upgrading and extending its CloudStream™ Net and CloudStream™ Backup solutions, for resilient client-side connectivity and VMware-aware optimized backup.

In addition to a significant investment in terms of its compute, storage, network and co-location facilities, Novosco has partnered with Hibernia Atlantic to connect its two main data centre locations in Park West and Clonshaugh in Dublin, over high speed data connections, to facilitate complete resilience and data centre independence.  With the addition of Hibernia’s secure connectivity, Novosco has also increased its capacity via a diverse ring topology throughout Europe, including routes linking Dublin, Belfast and London, as well as extending its national coverage by using Hibernia’s network to access key telecommunication exchanges.

“By and large, our enterprise customers have been cautious to date about adopting externally hosted cloud services.  For them to adopt such solutions, the security, resilience and flexibility has to be better and more cost effective than anything they can build on-premise”, said Patrick McAliskey, Managing Director of Novosco. “With the advent of our new and improved cloud offerings, that is now a reality.”

The new converged infrastructure system integrates compute, network, storage, virtualisation, and management components from trusted, industry leading vendors. This includes virtualisation software from VMware, server and networking hardware from Cisco Systems and storage hardware from EMC.

In addition to its new infrastructure service, Novosco also maintains a strategic partnership with VCE and supplies the VBlock™ Infrastructure Platform to help customers accelerate their journey to the cloud.  “We came to the conclusion that the VBlock™ platform is the best platform on the market on which to build scalable private clouds,” McAliskey said.

Meanwhile, Novosco’s traditional systems integration and IT outsourcing business was “as strong as it has ever been,” he said.

He expected some time to pass before cloud computing became the norm. For now, he said, Novosco would focus on developing a “trusted cloud” model to help migrate enterprise customers into the growing trend of consuming externally hosted cloud services.

Belfast, May 20th, 2010 - Novosco, Ireland’s leading provider of virtual and cloud IT infrastructure and services, today announced it has been appointed to implement private cloud computing throughout Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. This project represents the first Public Sector deployment of V-Block in the UK and Ireland, containing elements from the VCE coalition, using technologies from VMware, Cisco and EMC.

Built on Cisco’s Unified Computing System, the new private cloud based virtualised infrastructure will facilitate significantly greater numbers of virtual machines on the same piece of hardware. Cisco UCS offers centralised management over the compute, networking and storage elements needed to deploy virtual ICT infrastructures. This “wire once, walk away” approach will result in potentially speedier deployment times for healthcare delivery services.

The flexibility of private cloud computing within BHSCT will also afford management with greater control over the support and control of the environment, with the potential for new and improved services delivered within existing resource commitments and budgets. Future investments in the platform will also be significantly less than additions to physical environments, all of which future proofs BHSCT’s investment, whilst improving the patient experience. Novosco’s DataCentre Architecture Solutions’ Practice is underpinned by the VCE “DataCentre 3.0” vision. This approach, allied with EMC storage, Cisco’s UCS and VMware’s VSphere Could Operating System allows the Trust the potential to optimise DataCentre resources with increased flexibility compared to traditional hardware based solutions.

The Belfast Health and Social Care Trust (BHSCT) was formed in April 2007, by the merger of the previous six legacy healthcare trusts, within the greater Belfast area: Belfast City Hospital, Royal Group of Hospitals, Mater Infirmorium Hospital, South and East Belfast Trust, North and West Belfast Health & Social Services Trust, and Greenpark Healthcare Trust.  The resultant BHSCT provides services to over 340,000 patients and clients.

BHSCT employs over 22,000 staff, 1 in 30 of the working population in N Ireland, and with an annual revenue budget of £1.2bn, consuming over 12% of the total assembly budget, makes it the largest healthcare Trust in the UK.

Paul Duffy, Co-Director for ICT & Telecommunications said, “Novosco’s experience in virtualising large scale enterprise environments, along with their strong relationships with each of the VCE partners made this offering very compelling. We look forward to deploying the new virtualised infrastructure quickly to improve the ICT experience of our patients and staff alike.”

Patrick McAliskey, Novosco Managing Director said “BHSCT’s willingness to embrace this new way of delivering ICT services to staff and patients will undoubtedly benefit all within the Trust. We recognise the need to provide improved service to an increasingly sophisticated and ICT-reliant end user base, in the framework of constantly constrained budgets and resource commitments. BHSCT is setting the benchmark for ICT delivery, against which other public sector organisations will be measured in the coming years”.
